What is an F1B Goldendoodle blogpost

What is an F1B Goldendoodle?

What is an F1B Goldendoodle? It's a doodle that is 75% Poodle and 25% Golden Retriever. This is done when  an F1 Goldendoodle (50% Poodle 50% Golden Retriever) makes babies with a pure-bred Poodle.

Thanks to this Poodle-heavy heritage, F1B Goldendoodles typically have curlier, low-shedding coats and are often touted as being more allergy-friendly than earlier generations.

Generations of Goldendoodles (F1, F1B, F2, F2B, Multigen)

Understanding Goldendoodle generations helps you predict a pup’s genetics and coat. The “F” stands for filial (generation), and the “B” means a backcross to a purebred parent (almost always the Poodle). Here’s a quick rundown:

  • F1 Goldendoodle – A 50/50 mix of Golden Retriever and Poodle. Often wavy coats, some shedding.
  • F2 Goldendoodle – Two F1 parents. Unpredictable coats, from flat to curly.
  • F1B Goldendoodle – F1 doodle bred back to a Poodle (about 75% Poodle). Low-shedding, curly coats, great for allergy sufferers.
  • F2B Goldendoodle – F2 doodle bred to a Poodle (or F1 to F1B). About 62.5% Poodle, curly, allergy-friendly.
  • Multigen Goldendoodle – Third generation and beyond. Carefully bred for consistent non-shedding coats and predictable traits.

Temperament and Personality 🐾

Goldendoodles are celebrated for being friendly, outgoing, and intelligent. They tend to inherit a Golden Retriever’s gentle, people-pleasing nature along with the Poodle’s smarts. This makes them great with kids, quick to train, and enthusiastic companions. They’re active, affectionate, and often described as the perfect blend of “sweet and clever.”

Sizes: Standard, Mini, and Toy

  • Standard Goldendoodle – 50–90 lbs, 20–24 inches. Gentle giants who need space and exercise.
  • Medium Goldendoodle – 35–50 lbs. A nice in-between size for many families.
  • Mini Goldendoodle – 25–35 lbs, compact but full of energy. Great for city living.
  • Toy/Teacup Goldendoodle – 10–15 lbs. Tiny but playful, bred down with Toy Poodles.

Coat Care, Grooming, and Allergy Friendliness ✂️

Goldendoodles require regular brushing (several times a week) and professional grooming every 1–3 months to avoid mats. F1B and multigen doodles, with their curly coats, are the most allergy-friendly options. While often called “hypoallergenic,” no dog is 100% hypoallergenic. Still, Goldendoodles shed much less than many breeds, making them easier on allergy sufferers.

In Summary

F1B Goldendoodles combine the Golden Retriever’s warmth with the Poodle’s low-shedding smarts. Compared to other generations, they’re usually curlier, more allergy-friendly, and predictably cuddly. Whether you choose an F1, F2, or multigen doodle, all Goldendoodles are affectionate, intelligent, and goofy companions.
